In-home occupational therapy (OT) is for just about anyone who struggles to do any kind of daily tasks, including using the bathroom, bathing, dressing, cooking, cleaning, and eating. OT typically supports daily living, such as hygiene, routines, sensory issues, and more.
Your doctor may recommend OT as part of a treatment plan for stroke, arthritis, chronic pain, brain injury, joint replacement, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, poor balance, mental health, or behavior issues, just to name a few. We can assess what you need and personalize an OT plan for you.
We start by assessing everything that happens during your day, including hygiene, dressing, feeding, and identifying where there are pain and mobility issues. Occupational therapists are also trained to assess cognitive impairments.
Our home recommendations are personalized and determined on a case-by-case basis. Modifications can include simply moving furniture, adding safety rails, and replacing doorknobs to more complex constructions such as a wheelchair ramp.
The right equipment can make tasks easier and safer, and help the patient live independently. Some common equipment recommendations include transfer aids such as bed rails, toileting aids, bathing aids such as grab bars, dressing aids, and more.
Our occupational therapists can prescribe assistive mobility devices such as a cane, a walker, or a wheelchair to help with safe movement at home. We recommend the appropriate equipment and provide training for safe and proper use.
A significant part of OT is education. We provide our patients and their families with education to prevent falls, avoid accidents, and learn how to adapt to new ways of doing things. Our goal with education is to empower and instill confidence in our patients.
There are many types of OT activities and interventions that can help develop fine and gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, pinch and grip strength, and more. The appropriate activities are based on our initial assessment and doctor’s orders.
